Jilin University

1. JLU at a Glance

 

Jilin University, founded in 1946, located in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, is a key national comprehensive university, under the direct jurisdiction of the Chinese Ministry of Education, supported by Project 211 and Project 985. In 2000, the former Jilin University merged with four other universities, namely former Jilin University of Technology, former Norman Bethune Medical University, former Changchun University of Science and Technology, and former Changchun College of Posts and Communications. In 2004, the former University of Military Logistics also became part of Jilin University. Jilin University has become the biggest university in China by its largest enrollment. It offers 124 undergraduate programs, 299 master’s program, 237 doctoral programs and 41 post-doc programs. In 2013, Jilin University ranked No. 8 in China’s College and University Rankings, published by the China University Alumni Association and 301-400 in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Jilin University has 6,568 faculty members, of whom 2,058 are professors and 1,186 are doctoral supervisors. Jilin University is home to 69,000 full-time students, including over 24,000 graduate students, 43,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 international students from 98 countries.

The main university library is recognized by UNESCO, UNIDO and the World Bank, and boasts a collection of 6.98 million volumes.

In an increasingly international society, Jilin University has set up collaborative relationships with 199 universities and institutions from 34 countries and regions.

 

2. Norman Bethune Medical University:

 

Norman Bethune College of Medicine, Jilin University, formerly Norman Bethune University of Medical Science, was established in 1939, with a history of more than 70 years, was named after the outstanding Canadian thoracic surgeon. In 2000, it merged with Jilin University as present Norman Bethune College of Medicine of Jilin University.

 

Teaching Hospitals: It consists of three main teaching hospitals with more than 5500 beds and school of basic medicine. Apart from the three main teaching hospitals, there are more than 30 cooperative hospitals that provide internship resources for medical students of Norman Bethune College of Medicine, Jilin University.

 

Aim and Achievement: Capitalizing on the educational priority of a key comprehensive university, the college aims at cultivating clinical medical professionals at international level by providing medical education that is up to international standard. Since more than half a century, the institution has trained over fifty thousand medical professionals and contributed a lot in the development of medical science, medical education and public health in China.

 

Programs: Full-time undergraduate programs include Clinical Medicine (of five years, six years, seven years and eight years), Dental Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, etc. Currently students enrolled in undergraduate programs include around 2000 Chinese students, about 500 international students studying in MBBS program taught in English medium and more than 100 international students studying in various programs taught in Chinese medium. Around 30 international students are working on their master’s or doctoral degrees here now.

It offers 3 post-doctoral programs (Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Biology), 2 first-level doctoral programs (Basic Medicine and Biology), 14 second-level doctoral programs and 38 second-level master’s degree programs. All the doctoral programs and master's degree programs covering all the basic and clinical medicine specialties are available for international students who want to work on master’s or doctoral degrees here, the students could be taught both in English and Chinese.

 

Faculty and Staffs: Norman Bethune College of Medicine, Jilin University presently has 5100 faculty and staff members (including staff working in teaching hospitals),among whom there are 246 professors, 418 associate professors and 106 doctoral degree advisors, the three affiliated comprehensive hospitals totalize 5500 open beds for the patients and the internship students.

 

Cooperation and Exchange Programs: The University is also active in international cooperation and exchange programs, and has established ties with 26 educational institutions and academic organizations in countries and districts such as Japan, Canada, USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Korea, Hong Kong and many more.

 

3. MBBS Program (Program in English)

Introduction
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) program in Norman Bethune College of Medicine, Jilin University is a program enrolls international undergraduates and teaches them in English medium for 6 academic years. The whole process of teaching and cultivation of international students is carried out strictly according to related international standards of medical education. Jilin University has been approved by MOE as qualified university to offer MBBS program since 2007.

 

Program Description

The curriculum system in Jilin University has undertaken reform since 2011. The teaching schedule is based on the American USMLE syllabus, combining theory and practice instead of the former teaching mode: learn theory firstly then practice.

 

Core Courses: Human Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Diagnosis, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Medicine, Emergency Medicine, etc.

Duration of Study: 6 years (including one year complete rotational clinical internship)

Degree to be awarded: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

 

Internship: Students can choose to do it in the teaching hospitals of JLU (The three affiliated comprehensive hospitals totalize 5500 open beds for the patients and the internship students), their home country or any other country.

 

4. Requirements for Admission: 

 

1. Age: 18-30 years old
2. High school graduate or above, or have passed Grade Twelve (10+2)/F.Sc./A Level/WAEC or equivalent with an average score of 60%
3. Have Basic English language ability

4. A copy of passport.

5. A copy of completed Physical Examination Record Form

5. Admission

 

The JLU Office of International Students will examine the application and send by express mail the necessary materials such as the Jilin University International Student Admission Notice, the Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Visit China (the JW202 Form) and others to the local representative office.

The applicant should bring all the required documents to the Embassy/Consulate of the P.R. of China in the applicant’s home country and apply for an X visa to study in China.

 

Accommodations: The 5 exclusive international dormitories are comfortable and inexpensive, with cafeteria/kitchen, reading rooms with advanced equipments, fitness room, etc.

6. Changchun at a glance:

 

Changchun is a beautiful modern city, located to the northeast of Beijing, in the heart of the Northeast China Plain. Its urban population is now about 3 million. Lying in the temperate zone, Changchun is neither too hot nor too cold with four distinct seasons and an annual average temperature of 5.2

Jilin Province has special landscape with good ecological environment, rich natural, mineral and tourist resources. There are more than 300 tourist spot in Jilin Province. The Konguryo’s ruins, tombs, of the general and the King at Ji’an City, Jilin Province were listed in the World Famous Heritage List by the 28th Conference of the World Heritage Committee on July 1st, 2004.

Jingyue Tan (Crystal Moon Pond) to the southeast of the city is known for its human-planted forest area, the largest in Asia and a national resort with perfect ecological environment. The last puppet emperor of the Qing Dynasty built his palace in Changchun, which is one of the three imperial palaces still remaining in China.
